… Let them listen to Heavy Metal!

Dies jedenfalls ist das Resultat der Studie mit dem Titel „Three Decades Later: The Life Experiences and Mid-Life Functioning of 1980s Heavy Metal Groupies, Musicians, and Fans“ :) . (Wie so oft muessen die Steuerzahler fuer das Lesen der bereits bezahlten Forschung nochmals zahlen; deswegen gilt wieder: wer den Volltext haben will, muss mich nur fragen.)

Aber Heavy Metal … waren sind das nicht die Teufelsanbeter! Was soll aus solchen Leuten schon werden? Und tatsaechlich:

Research in the 1980s suggested that young “metalheads” were at risk for poor developmental outcomes.

Und der Oberchirurg des Land „Gottes“ …

[…] C. Everett Koop said that heavy metal’s destructive influence was similar to that of pornography.

Ob wir da Parallelen ziehen kønnen (Tihihi). Aber erstmal langsam, denn …

[…] heavy metal music […] is often stereotyped as a maladjusted fringe group […].

Und die Kinder? Denkt an die ueberhaupt niemand? Ah doch:

Parents and others feared that children were being drawn into Satan worship, druguse, wild sex, despair, and worse of all, suicide.

Gut, dass das mal gesagt wurde. Und besagte Eltern hatten immerhin einen bleibenden Einfluss! Denn …

[…] the work of the [Parents’ Music Resource Council] is the “Explicit Content: Parental Advisory” stickers […]

Und so ein Qualitaetsstempel ist schon wichtig! Wir wollen doch nicht, dass Kinder und Jugendliche sich aus Versehen die falsche Musik kaufen.

Soweit zu den auch heute noch weitverbreiteten Meinungen.

Aber wie sehen denn die Fakten aus. Nun ja, so:

Early psychological research in this area provided some evidence that teens who preferred heavy metal were more disturbed and aggressive—they took more risks (e.g., drinking and driving, sex with many partners), had more psychiatric problems, were higher in sensation-seeking, suicidality, drug use, and family dysfunction, were less optimistic, more impulsive, less conforming, and did more poorly in school […].

“Metalheads” were found to be more manipulative, cynical, and Machiavellian than non-metal fans […].

King […] examined a group of hospitalized youth who had substance abuse problems and found that the children with the most psychological symptoms preferred heavy metal music.

Uh Oh! Aber …

Even in this early work, psychologists were starting to ponder the chicken-and-egg nature of the research question.

Und dies nicht zu Unrecht, denn weitere fruehe Forschung …

[…] found that while those who were mentally ill or substance abusers preferred metal music more often than other genres, this music calmed them down and made them more attentive.

In another study, listening to heavy metal positively affected metalheads’ moods […].

Heavy Metal hilft also bei ernsten Problemen. Mhm … das konnte ja niemand ahnen! Aber es geht noch weiter …

Moreover, several studies noted that metalheads got better grades than other teens, and were even in programs for the academically gifted. Such students discussed the complexity of the music, the intensity of the lyrics, and the high levels of talent and skill of the musicians as variables that attracted them to the genre […].

Das kommt mir nicht ganz unbekannt vor. Und in Retrospektive wirkt auch dies vertraut:

Cadwallader […] found that gifted metalheads used the music to cope with being intellectually superior to, and thus separate from, their peers, in addition to coping with troubled family relationships and low self-esteem.

Neuere Studien fanden heraus, dass …

Listening to heavy metal was related to greater openness to experience.

Und …

Leung and Kier […] found that metal enthusiasts had “thrill seeking” personalities.

*hust* … Jup.
Und fuer das naechste muss ich etwas weiter ausholen.

Rentfrow and colleagues […] have developed a “structure of musical preferences,” resulting in five factors that cut across genres and relate to the emotional timbre of the music. One of these factors is the intensity of the music. The “intense” feeling structure includes heavy metal music as well as hip-hop. Those who prefer “intense” music have an array of positive characteristics across cultures—they are high on extraversion, openness to experience, dominance, intelligent self-view, and they are highly skilled in verbal tasks […].

Als Letztes zum Ueberblick dann noch dies:

Zweigenhaft […] found that […] those who preferred heavy metal had the lowest scores on neuroticism. They were low on extraversion, high on openness to experience, low in hostility, and low in achievement striving, […].

Der letzte Punkt bedeutet, dass Metalfans keine konkurrierenden Arschløcher sind, die den Hals nicht voll genug bekommen kønnen. Mehr von denen sollten in Banken arbeiten kommt mir da in den Sinn.

Aber wie auch immer, wir haben …

[…] little knowledge of long-term outcomes of these youth

… und die oben erwaehnten schaedigenden Effekte kønnten sich ja auf laengere Zeiten bemerkbar machen.

Mit der verlinkten Studie aenderte sich das aber.

Und wie sieht’s nun aus?

Nun ja, Metalfans sind spaeter im Leben ganz normale Menschen.

There were no significant differences in how happy the groups rated themselves on current happiness in life, […].

Nur verdienen sie mehr als Nicht-Metalfans.

Und sie sind gesuender (insb. auch psychisch, trotz negativer Erfahrungen als Kind oder waehrend der Jugend).

Und da mir als Vater vor allem auch an der nicht all zu fernen Zukunft gelegen ist, freute mich insbesondere:

When reflecting back on their youth, the metal groups recalled being significantly happier […] compared to non-metal groups.

… und:

[…] all metal groups were less likely to report having regrets about their youthful experiences, […].

… und auch dass jugendliche Metalfans signifikant weniger oft von sexuell uebertragbare Krankheiten geplagt werden, macht mich frøhlich :) .

Oder dies alles in kurz und leicht zu merken:

[Metalheads] were significantly happier in their youth and better adjusted currently than [the control groups].

Als Abschluss dann ein interessanter Fakt, versteckt zwischen den vielen Zahlen: Metalmusiker haben als Jugendliche zwar einen deutlich høheren Sexualtrieb, aber auch spaeter das erste Mal Sex als Metalfans oder die Kontrollgruppen.

Ein Widerspruch?

Nicht unbedingt, denn Metalmusiker haben mit deutlich (!) mehr verschiedenen Menschen Sex, als alle anderen. … Tihihi.
